Lesson 55 - Squeaky string crosses

2013-06-26 15:28:08

Today was all about the string crosses.

I have spent a considerable amount of practise time on this technique alone but have yet to fully emerge out of it enlightened. Funnily enough, it turns out that the bane of all my efforts lie in the shape of my left hand; not having enough space between my fingers and the fingerboard.

Lesson notes from Deryn:

1. String Crossing
- Feuillard pg. 41 No. 34 :- first practise the double stops as single notes. Treat them as double stops in the left hand.
- When practising the variations, choose around 4-8 obviously different ones.
- Mask what you've done so that you do a different set in your next session and eventually cover all of them.
- Feuillard pg. 42 No. 35 :- just get your left hand accustomed to playing the chords for now.

2. Study
- Excellent progress! Some very nice tone and phrasing in the sections you're technically more comfortable with.

- Main points to work on:
- - String crossing
- - Dynamics
- - Intonation
- - Harmonics

- Make sure you spend more time isolating and practising any problem shifts.
- Be sure to check whether the issues during string crosses.
- Harmonics: Position Pieces Target Practice exercises and Langin III chapter 39.

Learning the cello as an adult started as a dare but has now turned into an ongoing love affair; I hope to one day make her sing to her full potential. In the meantime, all spare time and moments are dedicated to this wonderful instrument as I am unable to think about anything else, much to the dismay of my other half :}

This is an attempt to remember the classes I have taken so that I don't forget.
