Lesson 112 - New pieces; Faure's Elegie, Beethoven's Sonata

2015-09-09 03:10:03

The scales calendar has been fantastic at keeping me focused during practise for the past 2 weeks. Where previously it seemed like an overwhelming task, the scales now fit in a more manageable 10 minutes. And the results are obvious; shifts are more confident, intonation is getting better, positions are more familiar. In any case, wish I'd have done this sooner!

Today's lesson had Deryn suggest that it was time for new piece. Looking through the ABRSM grade listings, a few pieces stood out as potential repertoires. We finally settled on 2 pieces; Faure's Elegie and Beethoven's G minor Sonata Adagio/Allegro after an awesome live performance of all the pieces courtesy of Deryn and piano accompaniment.

Some exercises to prepare me for the pieces include Feuillard exercises page 39, variation 7 and 13 for Beethoven and for Elegie, slow scales of about 100bpm of crotchets in C Minor on just the A string, 1 octave with slow vibrato before speeding up, played as loud and close to the bridge as possible without a scratchy sound where I need to work on getting the loudest sound to project my 'voice'. Aye carumba.

Learning the cello as an adult started as a dare but has now turned into an ongoing love affair; I hope to one day make her sing to her full potential. In the meantime, all spare time and moments are dedicated to this wonderful instrument as I am unable to think about anything else, much to the dismay of my other half :}

This is an attempt to remember the classes I have taken so that I don't forget.

My wonderful teacher, Deryn ~ http://cellostudio.info/
