Lesson 113 - Finding your voice

2015-09-23 18:25:54

Today we focused on Faure's Elegie. I brought a copy of a different edition (Peters) that I bought from a bargain bin in Newcastle recently and we compared it to the Julian Lloyd Webber edition we're playing from - the one I brought had no fingerings and more traditional phrasing and notations.

We discussed at length about "respecting the composer whilst having your own sound"; a level of technical ability cellists aim for.

When asked how I found the piece so far, I said it was technically straightforward but hard to express.

Deryn tells me I'm at a point in my cello journey to find my own voice and explore that aspect with repertoires whilst still doing studies and exercises. For this piece, to find efficient fingering and go big on dynamics.

Learning the cello as an adult started as a dare but has now turned into an ongoing love affair; I hope to one day make her sing to her full potential. In the meantime, all spare time and moments are dedicated to this wonderful instrument as I am unable to think about anything else, much to the dismay of my other half :}

This is an attempt to remember the classes I have taken so that I don't forget.
